In the world of online business and coaching, success often hinges on more than just knowledge and skills. It's about mindset, adaptability, and the willingness to learn and grow. Today, I want to share a powerful concept that has been resonating with me lately - the parable of the Seeker and the Sage, also known as the Empty Cup of Tea.
This Zen Buddhist parable tells the story of a university professor who visits a Zen master to inquire about Zen. As the master serves tea, the professor talks at length about his extensive knowledge of Zen. The master listens patiently, continuing to pour tea even as the cup overflows. When the professor can't help but point this out, the master replies, "Like this cup, you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?"
This simple yet profound story illustrates a crucial lesson for all of us in the coaching and online business world: the importance of maintaining an open mind and a learner's attitude, regardless of our experience or past successes.
As entrepreneurs, we often face challenges and setbacks. Maybe you've tried Facebook ads before and they didn't work out. Perhaps you launched a webinar that didn't convert as well as you'd hoped. It's easy to become discouraged and decide that certain strategies just don't work for your business. But what if, instead of writing off these methods, we approached them with a fresh perspective?
I'm reminded of a personal experience that perfectly illustrates this point. When my wife, JoJo, first started her online coaching business, we decided to run a challenge. I took a week off work, we set up ads, got leads, and had people in the challenge group. But when we closed the cart, we had zero sales. It would have been easy to conclude that challenges don't work or to put off trying again for months.
Instead, we chose to empty our cup. We solicited feedback from our audience and decided to run the challenge again just three weeks later. This time, we made adjustments based on the feedback we received. The result? That second launch generated enough revenue for me to leave my corporate career and fully commit to our online business.
This experience taught us a valuable lesson: sometimes, it's not about completely reinventing the wheel, but rather about being willing to try again with a slightly different approach. As my mentor often says, "One good webinar can change the trajectory of a business." The same can be said for one good video sales letter, one good challenge, or one good sales page.
When it comes to advertising, particularly on platforms like Facebook, it's crucial to maintain this open-minded approach. Alex Hormozi, in his book "$100M Leads," points out that in advertising, you often lose before you gain. He shares that he ran about nine ad campaigns at a loss before striking gold on the tenth - a campaign that more than made up for all the previous losses and generated substantial profit.
This underscores an important truth in our field: success often requires persistence and a willingness to learn from our failures. It's not always about finding a completely new strategy, but about refining our approach, being open to feedback, and having the courage to try again.
As you navigate your own coaching business journey, I encourage you to regularly "empty your cup." Be open to new ideas, be willing to revisit strategies that may not have worked in the past, and always maintain a learner's mindset. Remember, the results you achieve today don't have to be a repeat of past outcomes. Each new attempt is an opportunity for growth and success.
In your business, whether you're just starting out, transitioning from a 9-to-5, or looking to scale your already successful venture, maintaining this growth mindset is crucial. It's about being a good student, listening to feedback, and being willing to apply new strategies or revisit old ones with a fresh perspective.
As you reflect on this, consider where in your business you might benefit from emptying your cup. Are there strategies you've written off that might deserve another look? Are there areas where past disappointments are holding you back from potential breakthroughs?
Remember, in the world of online business and coaching, adaptability and a willingness to learn are often the keys to unlocking new levels of success. So, let's embrace the mindset of the seeker, always ready to learn, grow, and evolve.
